INDIVIDUAL REVIEW OF ETHICS: PRINCIPLES OF COLLECTING ANIMAL REMAINS

AND PERSONAL CODE OF CONDUCT

Principle A: Dignitate

Properly maintaining and displaying animal remains within the condition that they are being treated with dignity. Provide each remain with ample and clean space.

Principle B: Reverentia

Treat each remain with care. Gently, respectfully, and reverently. Each bone used to be a living thing, and there is a weight to that.

Principle C: Primum non nocere

Do No Harm. Or, do not knowingly act or treat any remains in a way that will cause damage or harm.

Code of Conduct:

Do not treat remains in a way that will cause them irreversible damage. This includes: improper storage, aesthetic use/decoration, improper cleaning. Do not take remains off of private property, unless the owner is aware and has consented. Do not purchase remains from sources where it cannot be confirmed if they were gained ethically, or if the product made of the remains does not follow the principles of the IRE. If remains are found and they are in a condition of irreversible damage, leave them to their habitat. If the original habitat is not suitable to follow the principles of the IRE, move to a more fitting location.

Amendment: These are MY PERSONAL boundaries for how I treat remains. If you would like to use them to guide your own practice, or display them in your own mortuary, please feel free to do so.
